In a speech to the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union on February 25 1956 Nikita S. Khrushchev, leader of the Soviet state and of the Communist Party, accused Joseph Stalin of immense crimes. On its 50th anniversary William Taubman, whose biography of Khrushchev won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize, called Khrushchev's "Secret Speech" "this great good deed" which "deserves to be celebrated."

Grover Furr began studying Russian language and literature as a teenager and became interested in Soviet history about a decade later. He has conducted extensive research on the Stalin period of Soviet history, on and off since the 1970s, and intensely for the past decade.
